1. Check the pattern before moving everything

Record the date, room and item where damage was first noticed. Photograph the fabric in good light and note whether the material is wool, fur, feathers, silk, a blend or a synthetic fabric. Look for more than one affected item, shed cases, fine webbing or small larvae in dark, undisturbed areas, while remembering that these clues are not a definitive identification.

2. Inspect the whole storage zone

Move through the wardrobe in a planned order. Check rarely opened drawers, garment bags, spare blankets, rugs, soft furnishings and boxes stored close to clothing. Pay attention to lint, pet hair and crumbs in corners, because organic debris can make a quiet storage area more useful to fabric pests.

Do not empty every cupboard onto the floor at once. Keep a clear clean area for items you have checked, and avoid shaking suspect fabrics through the home. If the wardrobe backs onto a damp wall or has poor airflow, record that condition as part of the inspection.

3. Protect and isolate items sensibly

Separate clearly affected or suspect items in a sealed, labelled bag or container until you decide on cleaning, laundering or professional advice. Follow the care label for each garment; do not use heat, cold, steam or a chemical product if it could damage the item or create a safety risk. Delicate, valuable or sentimental fabrics are better assessed by a suitable textile-care professional.

Vacuum accessible wardrobe edges and remove lint into a sealed rubbish bag. Empty the vacuum safely according to its instructions. Do not mix cleaning chemicals, spray clothing with a household product that is not labelled for that use, or apply moth treatments around people, pets or food areas.

4. Make storage less inviting

Keep clothing clean and fully dry before long-term storage, leave practical space between packed items and open the wardrobe periodically to check quiet corners. Repair or replace damaged seals on storage containers, keep cardboard and unused fabric off damp floors, and address leaks or condensation through the appropriate building or maintenance channel.

5. Know when a professional assessment is useful
