SPRING WEATHER & HOME PEST PREVENTION
Sydney spring pest prevention: a 23-second home checklist
A short reminder to check the everyday conditions around your home: open gaps, blocked drainage, food access and damp spots.
Watch: prepare your home for spring
Weather changes; check the conditions at your home
This video was prepared on 2026-09-27. The Bureau of Meteorology's 2026-09-15 Southern Hemisphere monitoring update described an established, strengthening El Niño. The Bureau also explained that its strength does not translate directly into the size of its effects on Australian rainfall or temperature.
A seasonal climate outlook is not a forecast for your street. Rain can still occur during an El Niño, and weather alone cannot tell you whether a property has a pest problem. Check the current Sydney forecast, then look at what is actually happening around your home.
Four simple checks for this week
- Door seals and screens. Look for worn door sweeps, torn screens and visible gaps. Arrange suitable repairs; leave ventilation, drainage and building inspection openings clear.
- Accessible drainage. Once conditions are safe, clear loose leaves around ground-level drains. Leave roof gutters, unstable covers and blocked or overflowing drains to the appropriate tradesperson.
- Food and rubbish. Use closed food containers, wipe up crumbs and spills, and keep bin lids closed. Put pet food away after feeding.
- Damp spots. Check under accessible sinks and around plant saucers. Report leaks and persistent moisture. Renters should document defects and contact the property manager before making alterations.
Over the next week or two, note where and when activity repeats. A clear photo, your suburb and the affected area give a pest professional a useful starting point. Arrange advice sooner for recurring indoor activity, damaged food packaging or inaccessible areas. These checks support prevention; they do not identify an unknown pest or guarantee a pest-free home.
